How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC?

Rheumatology fellowship is a two-year training program. Including medical school, residency and chief year, this is my ninth year at UNMC.

What do you like the most about your training program?

Without question, it is the people — how much everyone cares about the program and one another makes it special. Further, education is emphasized and prioritized by our program director, chair and entire division.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future:

In an ever-changing health delivery system, there has been increased focus on cost, quality metrics and documentation. Finding a balance between these administrative burdens with medical education, patient care and house officer wellness will be key.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

  • Having the privilege to serve as a chief resident for internal medicine residency. The residents are incredible and having amazing impact on patient care here at Nebraska.
  • Implementing a Women in Medicine Group in the Internal Medicine Department.
  • I am honored to be elected as president-elect for the House Officer Association.
  • I currently am serving on the board of directors for the Nebraska Medical Association and the Nebraska Rheumatology Society.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • I have a passion for advocacy and have traveled to Washington, D.C., several times to meet with our elected officials regarding health policy legislation.
  • If I need a good laugh, British comedians are my favorite. James Acaster is a current favorite.
  • My alternate career would be owning and operating a bakery.
