Babu Guda, Ph.D., professor and vice chair for bioinformatics research and training in the UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy in the College of Medicine, has been appointed assistant dean for research development.
In this capacity he will facilitate the integration of genomic data in research leading to applications in clinical practice; link to other UNMC, Nebraska Medicine and national efforts to develop workable integrated platforms; and identify UNMC College of Medicine needs for precision medicine and other bioinformatic and computational research areas.
“It’s exciting to be recognized for my contributions to the research development on campus,” Dr. Guda said.
His first order of business, he said, is to expand genomic and precision medicine endeavors.
Currently, Dr. Guda is collaborating on a research project with Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Eppley Institute and of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, utilizing multi-omics data from patients in the breast cancer registry.
By combining data sets of different omic types, (think genomic, proteomic, epigenetic and transcriptomic) a researcher can for example, predict subtypes of heterogeneous cancers using multi-omics data to develop precision medicine strategies for effective treatment.
“We frequently use machine learning and deep learning tools in our research to analyze different layers of multi-omics data and integrate this data to build models for subtyping complex diseases and prediction tools for diagnostic and prognostic use,” Dr. Guda said.
Dr. Guda said this position will help to advance educational programs, innovative translational research and patient care.
“It’s an exciting new chapter in precision medicine,” he said.
