It’s a new year and a new decade. Whether or not you made a resolution, chances are that you could benefit from being more active. The staff at the Center for Healthy Living is here to help you play your way to a more active lifestyle with intramural leagues.
Sometimes referred to as “exercise in disguise,” intramural leagues are organized specifically for employees and students. The center offers a range of different sports, and each sport is split into as many as three divisions based on the level of competition. Whether a team is made of co-workers, friends or family members, the goal is to help participants stay active and have fun in the process. It only takes about one minute to register. Sign up today!
Spring 2020 sports
- Pickleball: (2v2) Pickleball is a blend of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Like tennis, teams of two players hit a bouncing ball over a short net. Unlike tennis, Pickleball is played on a badminton court with paddles and a wiffle ball. It’s a breeze for beginners to learn and has a high ceiling for mastery.
- Matball (aka big base kickball) (8v8): Matball (also called Big Base Kickball) is a variation of kickball with much larger bases than in kickball and no limit to the number of players allowed on a base at the same time.
- Volleyball (6v6): The most popular sport at UNMC, volleyball games are co-ed and last 30-45 minutes.
- Basketball (5v5): Intramural basketball games are played with 20-minute halves and a three-minute halftime break.
- Futsal (aka indoor soccer) (6v6): Futsal is a variation of soccer played with a special ball that is smaller and heavier than a typical soccer ball, reducing bounce and allowing players more control to play in tight spaces. Anyone familiar with soccer will have no trouble learning futsal.
League Format
All league games are played Monday-Thursday evenings at the Center for Healthy Living gym (no membership required). Leagues will last seven or eight weeks and will end no later than April 16. Every team is scheduled to play one game per week every week, except during their single bye week.
