Registration open for Midwest Radiation Oncology Symposium
Registration is now open for the 2020 Midwest Radiation Oncology Symposium, to be held April 18-19 in Omaha.
The symposium is designed to provide all members of the interdisciplinary oncology team with education and training on recent advances in radiation oncology, physics and biology. It also will cover the role of radiation therapy in multidisciplinary cancer care. Additionally, it will provide up-to-date information to referring physicians seeking to transfer their patients to the oncology team.
The symposium is intended for radiation, medical and surgical oncologists; oncology nurses; nurse practitioners; physician assistants; medical physicists; dosimetrists; radiation therapists; fellows, residents, and students who work with patients diagnosed with various cancers.
The deadline for early registration is Feb. 14; registration closes on April 10. Find more information and register.
Registration open for Extracorporeal Life Team Symposium
Registration is open for the Extracorporeal Life Team Symposium, to be held March 27-28 in Omaha.
The symposium will engage teams through multidisciplinary learning. Participants will be introduced to the latest techniques and technologies in ECLS support. Engaging didactic sessions combined with hands-on workshops will allow participants to identify appropriate candidates for initiation of ECLS or referral to an ECLS center, handle simulated cases of acute respiratory and cardiac failure, manage circuit events, and safely transfer patients on support when appropriate.
The symposium is intended for physicians (cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, intensivists, nephrologists, pulmonologists, critical care), respiratory therapists, perfusionists, nurses, pharmacists, advanced care providers, case managers, hospital administrators, and students.

Public health students selected to AJPH Student Think Tank
Roger Gonzales, a doctoral student in health promotion at the UNMC College of Public Health, has been selected as a member of the American Journal of Public Health’s 2020 Student Think Tank. The AJPH is a core peer-reviewed journal in public health. Gonzales will be one of six students involved in selecting the monthly cover design for the AJPH, developing a public health podcast, writing editorials to inform and advocate about public health issues, and boosting engagement between the journal and the broader public health community through social media. Gonzales said he will bring a Midwest perspective to the national journal, and hopes to bring greater attention to issues like the recent floods.
Bookstore to hold Valentine’s Day sale
The UNMC Bookstore, located in the Student Life Center on the Omaha campus, will hold a Valentine’s Day sale next week.
From Feb. 12-14, everything in the store that is red will be 14% off.
Retirements announced
The UNMC Department of Human Resources has released a list of 10 retirements scheduled between Jan. 1 and Oct. 10, 2020. The list includes one person with more than 35 years of service.
Leading the list in seniority is Gerianne Miller, UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. She will retire July 1 with nearly 37 years of service, after starting her career at UNMC on March 31, 1983.
Here’s the list of other announced retirements in order of longevity:
- Susan Siebler, UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, will retire on April 3 (start date March 17, 1983)
- David Staiert, UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, retired Feb. 1 (start date Nov. 25, 1989)
- Mary Peterson, UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, will retire Oct. 3, 2020 (start date July 23, 1990)
- Elizabeth Kumru, UNMC Office of Public Relations, retired Feb. 1 (start date May 9, 1994)
- Audrey Paulman, M.D., will retire Feb. 11 (start date Dec. 9, 1996)
- Dana Samson, College of Nursing, retired Jan. 4 (start date Jan. 1, 1998)
- John Ridgway, Pharm.D., UNMC Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, retired Jan. 3 (start date Dec. 6, 2004)
- Kenneth Follett, M.D., Ph.D., UNMC Department of Neurosurgery, retired Jan. 1 (start date Jan. 1, 2005)
- Carolyn Peterson, Clinical Research Center, retired Jan. 1 (start date Jan. 12, 2009)
