Internal Medicine Message From the Chair

The Internal Medicine department is off to a great start in the new decade. On January first, we created the new Allergy and Immunology division with Dr. Jill Poole as the inaugural division chief. It will be exciting to see how they continue their growth in educational, research, and clinical activities. The allergy faculty will collaborate closely with their colleagues in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep medicine, their former home as well as colleagues in the division of Rheumatology and Immunology as each division has interests in immunology. On February first, we will welcome Dr. Peter Mannon as the new Division Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Paustian Inflammatory Bowel Disease center director as well as Dr. Roslyn Mannon as Associate Division Chief for Research for the Nephrology division and Vice Chair of Research Mentoring and Academic Development for the department. In March, we will learn which residents are joining us for the next academic year. Who knows what April might bring!

There are several notable achievements by faculty in the newsletter. Importantly, Dr. Micah Beachy was selected to be one of 10 hospitalists across the country to be recognized by the American College of Physicians (ACP) as a top hospitalist. This is wonderful recognition of Dr. Beachy’s work as well as the reputation of our hospitalist group (this is the second time UNMC has had a faculty member recognized by this program). Dr. Stephen Rennard in the PCCMS division received international recognition as an honorary fellow of the faculty of pharmaceutical medicine from the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.

The Rheumatology division was highlighted for their researchers at the annual meeting of the national Rheumatology Research Foundation (the links will take you to a great video). Two GI fellows (Drs. Mashiana and Dhaliwal) and one PCCM fellow (Dr. Grant Turner) had academic successes recently.

Don’t forget to checkout Dr. Shannon Boerner’s faculty development tip in this newsletter on The Writing Center and how that resource might be of benefit. There is also information on new faculty and staff. Plus, there are some fun pictures of our education team (and others).

Nebraska Medicine and UNMC are taking time to focus on how we make our cultures even stronger to support our shared ITEACH values (innovation, teamwork, excellence, accountability, courage, healing). In January, our culture shaping conversation is around why culture matters. I encourage you to think about what you like best about the culture in the department and what behaviors we need in our culture to help us be even more effective as a team. I am going to ask myself how well I am listening in meetings and conversations; am I treating everyone with respect; and what can I do to support others. Let’s all take a little time to think about our culture and discuss with one another how we continue to make the department, UNMC, and Nebraska Medicine a great place to work.

I am grateful for all that each of you does and excited for what lies ahead in 2020.

Stay warm!
