On Jan. 20, the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine will once again honor the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with a keynote presentation by Dell Gines, senior community development advisor with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Omaha branch.
The celebration to honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is inspired by his following famous quote:
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Gines has a national reputation around his specialty of entrepreneurship-based economic development, which focuses on using entrepreneurship to develop rural and urban core economies. He has authored four guides and an eBook on the subject.
In 2011, Gines was recognized by the Omaha Jaycees as a Ten Outstanding Young Omahans Award recipient, and he has twice received the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s President’s Award for his innovative community development work in urban communities.
He holds master’s degrees in business administration and finance and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Clarkson Tower, Lower Storz Pavilion.
Jeffrey P. Gold M.D., chancellor at UNMC and UNO, will open the celebration with a welcome and introductions, and Aileen Warren, assistant vice chancellor of human resources at UNMC, will provide opening remarks.
Food and beverages are available for the first 150 people. Keyboardist Nate Asad and drummer Billy Foeman Quartey will provide musical accompaniment.
Parking for off-campus visitors is available in Lot 63, located at 40th and Marcy streets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A shuttle will run between Clarkson Tower and Lot 63 from 11 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 2 p.m.
