UNMC’s O’Connor to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

The Ancient Order of Hibernians Fr. Flanagan Division will honor Tom O’Connor, UNMC senior associate director of public relations, with a Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual awards banquet dinner on Feb. 22 at the German-American Society Hall, 3717 S. 120th St.

The event, which is open to the public, begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $40 for AOH members and $45 for non-members.

The Hibernians represent the most broadly based Irish-American organization with more than 46,000 members in 46 states, Canada and Ireland. The many divisions of AOH strive to showcase Irish culture through art, dance, music, sports and other events.

UNMC scientists claim three cancer research awards

Two graduate students and a faculty member in the UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology were recently recognized at the 26th annual meeting of the American Association of Indian Scientists in Cancer Research in Atlanta. The award winners included:


  • Graduate Student Award – Koelina Ganguly, a graduate research assistant;
  • Postdoctoral Fellow Award – Rizwan Ahmad, Ph.D., instructor; and
  • Travel scholarship for doctoral candidates – Saswati Karmakar, graduate research assistant.

The aim of the organization is to support the excellent work being done by young Indian American cancer researchers. Of the nine total awards given, UNMC scientists claimed three of them.

Seven Doctors Project reading set for Thursday

The public is invited to witness the works from the fall Seven Doctors Project (7DP) participants and faculty. The free event will be Thursday, Jan. 16, from 7-9 p.m. at KANEKO, 1111 Jones, St., in Omaha. There will be multiple readings and a live performance by Rebecca Lowry. Registration is required via the KANEKO website.

7DP, a KANEKO Collaborative Partner Program and part of KANEKO PASSAGES, provides community outreach and mentoring in a creative writing workshop format. The mission of 7DP is to provide ongoing writing workshops and other activities to assist physicians, health care workers, staff, patients and community members in the exploration of the creative process through study and practice of creative writing.

Retirements announced

Francisca Rebolloso, a member of the Munroe-Meyer Institute cytogenetics staff for more than four decades, was among UNMC staff members whose retirements were announced this week by the UNMC Department of Human Resources.

Besides Rebolloso, whose UNMC career began on Nov. 4, 1979, and ended Jan. 4, 2020, other retirements included, in order of longevity:

  • Ulrike Otten, College of Allied Health Professions, retired Dec. 21 (start date Aug. 3, 1981)
  • Carol Pullen, Ed.D., UNMC College of Nursing-Omaha Division, retired Jan. 1 (start date: July 19, 1993)
  • Victor Holly III, UNMC Department of Business and Finance, retired Nov. 13 (start date: Oct. 1, 1998) (Holly died on Nov. 12 — here is his obituary in UNMC Today.
  • Eleanor Strom, UNMC College of Dentistry, retired Jan. 1 (start date: Aug. 22, 2014)
  • James Kappen, Ed.D., UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences, retired Jan. 4 (start date: Jan. 1, 2017)
