Public health students excel at national conference

Fourteen UNMC College of Public Health students attended the annual American Public Health Association (APHA) conference on Nov. 2-6 to present their research and attend a leadership institute for students.

The students joined nearly 13,000 public health practitioners from around the U.S. for the national meeting in Philadelphia.

Students who presented research in poster and oral sessions at the meeting were:

  • Gwenndolyn Porter, “Addressing rural weight loss through primary care: A multi-phase study.” — Selected as poster award winner by Delta Omega, the honor society for graduate students in public health.
  • Roger Gonzales, “Awareness and knowledge of Hispanics/Latinos in Nebraska on colorectal cancer screening.”
  • Moses New-Aaron, “Analysis of the epidemiological and laboratory studies of the embryotoxic effects of nitrate and atrazine interaction.”
  • Kavita Mosalpuria, M.B.B.S., “Association of health status and customer satisfaction with non-financial barriers.”
  • Suswara Mandala Rayabandla, “Characteristics of super-utilizers from an urban integrated health system in the Midwest, 2014-2016.”

  • Shreya Roy, “Impact of ACA Medicaid expansion on preventive care utilization of children.”

The following students were selected to attend the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) Student Leadership Institute during the APHA conference:

  • Erin Johnson – M.P.H. student, Epidemiology
  • Sabrine Chengane – M.P.H. student, Maternal & Child Health
  • Valerie Pacino – Ph.D. student, Health Services Research & Policy
  • Suswara Mandala Rayabandla – M.P.H. student, Public Health Administration and Policy

The ASPPH Student Leadership Institute is a skill-building opportunity for student leaders from ASPPH-member institutions. This year’s theme was climate change. Students learned design thinking tools and methodologies (affinity mapping, customer journey mapping, and problem scoping), how to use execution intelligence around ideas (ideation skills, product cycles, resource mapping) and then put those skills to use to come up with solutions that address heath and climate change.
