UNMC to hold Oct. 9 open house for allied health and nursing careers

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Allied Health Professions and College of Nursing will hold a free "Backstage Pass" open house event in Omaha for those interested in learning about careers in the allied health and nursing professions.
The event will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education on the northeast corner of 42nd and Emile streets. Free parking is available two blocks south of Leavenworth St. in Lots 62 and 64. The lots are just north of Mason St. between 38th Ave. and 40th St.
The demand for allied health professionals and nurses is high as all fields face a staffing shortage. The event will enable prospective students to talk with current students, as well as faculty, and learn first-hand about these careers. Students will get to experience some of the new technology used in the classroom.
Allied health professionals — which include physical therapists, radiographers, medical laboratory scientists, physician assistants and sonographers — make up approximately 60 percent of the health care workforce.
Pre-registration is required for the free Backstage Pass events.
Students will have the opportunity to hear about the professions and engage in interactive booths with activities that demonstrate what each profession is like. Admissions staff will be on hand to answer questions about applying to one of the programs.
The professions represented are:

  • Cardiovascular interventional technology;
  • Clinical perfusion education;
  • Cytotechnology;
  • Diagnostic medical sonography;
  • Genetic counseling
  • Magnetic resonance imaging;
  • Medical laboratory science;
  • Medical nutrition education;
