COM resident of the month

Name: Blaine Schlawin, D.O.

Medical school you attended/year you graduated: Des Moines University/2018

Residency/fellowship at UNMC: Anesthesiology

Program director: Andrea Dutoit, M.D.

How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC:
Four years, currently in my second-year of post-graduate training (PGY-2)/first-year of clinical anesthesia training (CA-1)

What do you like the most about your training program:
My co-residents! They have become my “Omaha family” and are all amazing individuals who I would entrust to take care of me during surgery any day!

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future:
I think one of the biggest challenges we face is remembering WHY we do what we do in a medical world that is constantly adopting more rules, regulations and policies. Caring for others – whether that be patients, nurses, techs, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, or other physicians – should always take priority.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:
The thing I’m most proud of in my life is my faith and my goal to live it out daily through my interactions with others. I have been given much and want to bring positivity, compassion and kindness to everyone I meet – WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?).

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • I have an identical twin brother.
  • I have had two heart procedures – one for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure and another for catheter ablation for Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome.
  • I am a (self) published author on Amazon.
