Zach Bauman, D.O., has been named medical director, and Emily Cantrell, M.D., has been named associate medical director of the division of trauma in the UNMC Department of Surgery.
Dr. Bauman will oversee the administrative aspects of the trauma program, which includes performance improvement and patient safety activities, as well as education and outreach. He will lead the trauma team in the overall care of patients.
“I would like to thank Dr. Bauman and Dr. Cantrell for stepping up to fill these new leadership roles,” said David W. Mercer, M.D., chair of the UNMC Department of Surgery. “I am confident they will serve our organization well as we head into reverification as a Level 1 ACS Trauma Center.”
Nebraska Medical Center is the only Level 1 trauma center that cares for both adult and pediatric patients. The trauma program will undergo reverification by the ACS in September 2020.
Dr. Bauman is replacing Lisa Schlitzkus, M.D., who is moving to Colorado Springs, Colo., at the end of October.
“I am very honored to be taking on this new role,” Dr. Bauman said. “The trauma program here has gone through great advancement over the last decade, which is credited to the hard work and dedication of previous leadership and teamwork. I cannot thank Dr. Schlitzkus enough for her guidance and wish her all the best. I will strive to continue to improve upon the tradition of trauma excellence already established here and am excited to work with everyone involved in the care of trauma patients.”
“On behalf of the trauma program, I would like to say thank you to Dr. Schlitzkus for her leadership, service and expertise while with Nebraska Medicine and UNMC,” Dr. Mercer said.
Congratulations, Dr. Bauman. Best wishes on future success and excellence in patient care.
