Dr. Davies pens blog post for American Academy of Pediatrics

Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Dele Davies, M.D., is the author of a new blog for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which is called “AAP Voices Blog.” Dr. Davies’ blog, titled “Disasters’ Rising Toll Makes Family Preparedness Key,” highlights the important role pediatricians can play in emergency and disaster preparedness planning.

September is National Preparedness Month, an annual campaign to encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies and disasters. See the AAP National Preparedness Month web page for additional ideas on how to get involved in emergency and disaster preparedness planning.

Students at the UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division did community outreach work during Husker Harvest Days, checking blood pressure and providing skin cancer screenings for about 1,600 people attending the event earlier this month. Results of screenings were shared so participants could provide them to their health care provider. Nurse practitioners supervising the students referred participants with suspicious skin issues for follow-up. The experience gives students more exposure and confidence with clinical skills, as well as the opportunity to provide education. The students also learned from participants about rural culture, including advances in food production and safe agriculture practices.

Students at the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff ran three nutrition stations and assisted with two others during the Nebraska Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day at the YMCA Trails West Camp in Scottsbluff recently, as well. At total of 437 third-graders participated from Morrill, Mitchell, Minatare, Lake Minatare, Community Christian, Gering and Scottsbluff Public Schools.

Rural Futures Institute seeking fellows

The Rural Futures Institute (RFI) at the University of Nebraska is seeking highly-motivated students and passionate community leaders to increase their inclusive leadership capacity while creating the future of Nebraska’s rural communities through workforce development, economic development, recruitment and retention of residents, access and more.

Deemed RFI Fellows, selected students and community innovators will join forces for 10 weeks during summer 2020 to make significant progress on strategic community initiatives and priority projects while immersing themselves in one-to-one, inclusive leadership coaching with the University of Nebraska’s Helen Fagan, Ph.D.

Students will live, work and serve in the community they are focused on, and community innovators will invite them into the life of rural Nebraska.

Details and applications for the experience are here. The deadline to apply is Oct. 17, and informational webinars are scheduled for Sept. 26 (communities) and Oct. 3 (students).

After completing the application, students will be interviewed in November and notified of the selection in December. Communities will work through project definitions with RFI staff throughout the winter, and everyone will be matched in early 2020 based on projects that fit their expertise and interests. All fellows are required to complete training before the in-community experience, which will take place May 25-July 31, 2020.
