Re-Imagining U offers ‘mental health first aid’ cohort

Steven Wengel, M.D.

Re-Imagining U’s “Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education” cohort will begin Sept. 12, and registration is now open.

“With the ever-rising focus on wellness within higher education and medical schools, Re-Imagining U is partnering with Steven Wengel, M.D., and the UNMC wellness team to equip participants with useful tools to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis,” said Diane Ratigan, learning and development specialist with the UNMC Department of Human Resources.

Participants will learn how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of mental illness.

“This course is perfect for individuals wanting to prepare themselves to be a help to those around us,” Ratigan said.

Participants who complete the cohort receive a certification in Mental Health First Aid in Higher Education.

All four classes meet from 10 a.m.-noon, and the cohort will be taught by Crystal Fuller of Region 6 and Mental Health First Aid USA. Meeting dates are:

  • Sept. 12: University of Nebraska at Omaha Weitz Community Engagement Center, Room 205
  • Oct. 1: UNMC College of Public Health, Room 2001
  • Nov. 14: UNO Weitz Community Engagement Center, Room 205
  • Dec. 3: UNMC College of Public Health, Room 2001

Re-Imagining U cohorts differ from courses. Courses meet once and include an overview of a topic with some discussion and sharing in the class, and some are specific to the UNMC or UNO campus. Cohorts meet four times, once per month over four months, for a deep dive into a specific topic resulting in some type of outcome from the course.

Attendees must make a commitment to attend all four courses in the cohort.

Registration is required for all UNMC courses. See more information on and register for the courses offered this fall by Re-Imagining U.
