Former UNMC College of Dentistry faculty member dies at age 75

Tom Gound, D.D.S.

Services were held Saturday, July 27, for Tom Gound, D.D.S., a past director of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry's postgraduate endodontics program. Dr. Gound died on July 20. He was 75.

Dr. Gound received his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Iowa in 1967 and his master's degree in special studies with an endodontics specialty from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, Wash.

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the etiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the tooth pulp, root, and periapical tissues.

After serving in the United States Air Force for more than 20 years and retiring as a lieutenant colonel, he joined the College of Dentistry in 1991 as an assistant professor. He served as director of the postgraduate endodontics program from 1992 to 2010. During his time at the college, Dr. Gound trained numerous endodontists. He retired in 2012.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Gound was a diplomate of the American Association of Endodontists Foundation, a regional mentor for the Endodontics Board Certification Committee, a student ambassador for the American Association of Endodontists Foundation, a past president of the Nebraska Endodontics Society, and a member of the Journal of Endodontics Scientific Advisory Panel.

"Those of us privileged to have him as our director and mentor will miss his warm, kind personality, as well as his many tales of hunting and fishing,” said G. L. Stephenson, D.D.S., assistant professor and current director of the postgraduate endodontics program at the College of Dentistry. “His passion for endodontics was apparent and he conveyed that passion to us. We carry with and call upon his influence every day of our lives."

Dr. Gound is survived by his wife, Robin Gound, a group practice coordinator at the College of Dentistry, his daughters, Christie and Jessica Gound, Robin's children, Adrian and Katie Bossung, and five grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to The Monarch Hospice in Lincoln. Online condolences may be left here.
