TeamSTEPPS training set for Kearney campus

The training will be held at UNMC's Health Sciences Education Complex in Kearney.

The Nebraska Coalition for Patient Safety (NCPS) will conduct a TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer workshop at UNMC’s Health Sciences Education Complex in Kearney on July 29-30.

UNMC faculty is invited to attend the event for a discounted registration fee of $50 for both days.

Poor communication and lack of teamwork remain root causes of more than two-thirds of adverse events.

Research conducted in Nebraska hospitals has demonstrated that implementing and using team strategies and tools can improve all four components of a culture of safety:

  • reporting;
  • overall culture;
  • teamwork culture; and
  • learning culture.

This research is part of the evidence base for improving safety culture cited by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Consistent with previous TeamSTEPPS® workshops conducted in Nebraska:

  • Day 1 (July 29), attendees will learn and practice team strategies and tools (TeamSTEPPS® Fundamentals).
  • Day 2 (July 30), attendees will learn implementation strategies including coaching, managing culture change, measurement and evaluation, and action planning.

Participants can attend both days to become a certified TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer.

It is suggested that at least three people attend the workshop to become TeamSTEPPS Master Trainers. The workshop is appropriate for clinical and non-clinical staff. Katherine Jones, Ph.D., president of the board of directors of NCPS, will lead a team of experienced Master Trainers to conduct the workshop.
