Lookin’ at U: Tina Hovorka

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.

I provide administrative support for the surgeons and administrator in the UNMC Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Teamwork is one of our ITEACH values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group at UNMC exhibit this value.

I am fortunate to work with such a wonderful team. I witness daily examples of teamwork across campus, but the instances that always touch my heart are when a simple act of kindness positively affects visitors to the UNMC/Nebraska Medicine campus.

On countless occasions, I have seen an employee, or been that employee, to approach a visitor looking overwhelmed or confused and take the time to ask if they need assistance, listen to their concern, and personally walk with them to the correct location. Working here over the years one can become familiar with the twists, turns, and walls that seem to appear and disappear overnight. I have witnessed many landscape changes over the years. I understand how complex, even intimidating, it can be to navigate at times. Even more so for visitors that are not familiar with the campus. To see the relief wash over the face of a person when they reach their destination is wonderfully rewarding.

The teamwork that takes place across facilities, departments, and divisions is one of many reasons that I have proudly called UNMC my “home” for so many years and will until the day I retire.

What is your favorite summer activity?

I enjoy backyard barbecues and sharing outdoor adventures with family.

List three things people may not know about you.

• I lived in Alaska for seven months and came face-to-face with a moose.
• I love photography.
• My faith and family are the most important things to me.
