Chancellor Gold congratulates Interim President Fritz on historic appointment

Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., chancellor of UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), extended his congratulations and support to Susan Fritz, Ph.D., on her appointment as interim president-elect of the University of Nebraska system.

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents named Dr. Fritz to the position Thursday. A 30-year veteran of NU, Dr. Fritz has served as executive vice president and provost since 2012. She will become the first woman to lead the university since the system office was created 51 years ago.

“Dr. Fritz shares our enthusiasm about the future of the University of Nebraska and the amazing opportunities that are ahead of us,” Dr. Gold said. “In my time in Nebraska, I have known Dr. Fritz to be an incredibly thoughtful and driven leader who never loses focus on our collective mission of providing access to exceptional education, research, healthcare and service. We look forward to working with her to build on our shared momentum as this leadership search moves forward. All of us at UNMC and UNO wish Dr. Fritz the very best on this historic journey.”

Fritz, a Nebraska native, will assume the title of interim president on Aug. 15, following the departure of current President Hank Bounds, Ph.D. She will remain in the role until the Board completes its national search for the next president and her successor is in place.

The University of Nebraska president is the chief executive officer of the University of Nebraska, leading a system of four campuses and the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture that together comprise 52,000 students and 16,000 employees.
