Thomas Novotny, M.D., a global health expert and 1973 alum of the UNMC College of Medicine, will hold an informal conversation with students and faculty Friday from 10 to 11 a.m., in the College of Public Health third floor commons area.
Dr. Novotny, emeritus professor of global health and an adjunct professor of family medicine and public health, University of California, San Diego, received his master’s in public health from Johns Hopkins University in 1992. In 2015, UNMC awarded Dr. Novotny an Honorary Doctorate of Science degree for high distinction in science, service research, education and mentorship.
During a 23-year career in the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Novotny served as a family physician in Northern California; as a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in Denver; as an epidemiologist in the Office on Smoking and Health, as CDC liaison and assistant dean for public health practice at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health; and as CDC liaison to the World Bank. He is a former assistant surgeon general.
