The Nebraska Statewide Disability Leadership Training Seminar Series scheduled for March 15-16 at the Norfolk Public Library has been cancelled due to the flooding/bad weather conditions that have impacted northeast Nebraska.
Mark Smith, assistant professor at the Munroe-Meyer Institute at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and coordinator of the training seminar, said the training seminar will be rescheduled. An announcement will be made when a new date is determined.
"We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause," Smith said, "but with several roads between Norfolk and Omaha/Lincoln impassable due to the flooding, we thought it would be in everyone’s best interests to cancel the training seminar and look for a new date."
Smith said the RSVP numbers for the training seminar were quite promising.
"There was definitely a good response," Smith said. "We look forward to holding the seminar at a later date."
The free two-day training seminar is aimed at persons with disabilities, family members, concerned citizens and professionals who are interested in promoting the best outcomes for individuals with disabilities and their families in Nebraska.
The seminar will provide leadership and advocacy training regarding systems of services and supports to individuals with disabilities and their families, including philosophical tenets, current systems, opportunities for leadership, systems change strategies, and planning.
Participants will receive support at the seminar and beyond on developing advocacy plans, building and supporting state and local coalitions with the goal of improving services and systems for individuals with disabilities.
The project has been funded by the Nebraska Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities.
