Search begins for new associate vice chancellor for academic affairs

Rowan Zetterman, M.D.

With a focus on internal candidates, a UNMC committee has begun its search for a new associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Rowen Zetterman, M.D., who has served in the role since January 2018, has announced plans to step down from the position on June 30. As he moves toward semi-retirement, Dr. Zetterman also will step down from his role as director of faculty mentoring, but continue to serve as associate vice chancellor for strategic planning.

"The associate vice chancellor for academic affairs role provides a great professional advancement opportunity for someone at UNMC," Dr. Zetterman said. "There are multiple components within it."

Dr. Zetterman noted how the position provides opportunities to serve as the research integrity officer and oversee responsible research conduct training for graduate students and post-doctoral students. The position also, he said, allows the successful candidate to oversee the administrative aspects of all new hires and reappointments on behalf of the senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and help with shepherding new academic programs through the Board of Regents approval process among other duties.

The successful candidate will be expected to hold a terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., Pharm.D., or DNP), and have been a full professor for at least five years. (Check sidebar for more details.) The role is a minimum 0.50 FTE position.

The search committee is chaired by Chris Kratochvil, M.D., associate vice chancellor for clinical research, UNMC; vice president for research, Nebraska Medicine; and chief medical officer, UNeHealth. In addition to Dr. Kratochvil, search committee members include:

  • Anne Bowen, senior assistant to the chancellor
  • Joseph Vetro, Ph.D., associate professor, College of Pharmacy
  • Paul Sorgen, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, College of Medicine
  • Paul Fey, Ph.D., professor of pathology and microbiology, College of Medicine
  • Pam Carmines, Ph.D., associate dean for Graduate Studies
  • Julie Sebastian, Ph.D., dean, College of Nursing
  • Sarah Gloden-Carlson, J.D., chief compliance officer

Faculty are encouraged to contact Dr. Kratochvil with questions. Anyone interested in the position should apply via the job positing on the Human Resources Department's website. The first round of applications will be reviewed in mid-February. The position will remain open until filled.
