Dr. Beachy is governor-elect for Nebraska Chapter of ACP

Micah Beachy, D.O., associate professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, has been elected as the next governor for the Nebraska chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP). The ACP is a national organization of internists, the largest medical-specialty organization, and second-largest physician group in the United States. Its 154,000 members include internists, internal medicine subspecialists, medical students, residents, and fellows.

College of Nursing faculty, students receive March of Dimes honors
College of Nursing faculty and students were among more than 500 guests gathered for the annual Nebraska and Western Iowa March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Awards held at the Hilton Omaha Downtown. The event honored 39 nursing professionals in a variety of categories including Excellence in Academics, Excellence in Informatics, Excellence in Leadership/Mentoring, Rising Star, and Nurse of the Year.

More than $108,000 was raised to support March of Dimes as they lead the fight for the health of all moms and babies.

College of Nursing award recipients are: Spirit of Nursing Award, Anne Wilber, instructor, UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division and Cathrin Carithers, D.N.P., assistant dean, UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division; as well as student nominees Taira Anderson, Northern Division; Racheal Daigger, Kearney Division and Jiosajandy Garcia Reyna, Omaha Division.

The honorees were selected by a committee of their peers and honored for their achievement and leadership in their respective professions within Nebraska and Western Iowa.

Teresa Carlson named manager of accounts payable for UNO and UNMC
Teresa Carlson, current accounts payable manager at UNO, will assume responsibility for the accounts payable operations at both UNMC and UNO effective immediately, the Office of Business and Finance announced Tuesday.

“Teresa has been a UNO employee for 30 years, and we welcome her to UNMC,” said Bill Lawlor, assistant vice chancellor of finance and business services.

Winter Essentials Drive set to run through Dec. 12 at Omaha, Kearney
The Student Ambassadors of the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions are holding a Winter Essentials Drive through Dec. 12 to help homeless and needy populations in Omaha and Kearney. The group is seeking:

  • Clothing for adults and children, including T-shirts, jackets, hoodies, pants, shoes, hats and other apparel;
  • Bedding, such as blankets and sheets;
  • Toiletries, including razors, soaps, toothpaste and deodorant; and
  • Packaged foods, such as granola bars, cereal bars, macaroni and cheese, and peanut butter.

In Omaha, dropboxes are located at the Sorrell Center, the McGoogan Library, the College of Pharmacy and the main doors of Wittson Hall. Items collected will be donated to the Open Door Mission in Omaha.

In Kearney, dropboxes will be located at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Student Union and at the Health Science Education Complex. Donations will be given to the Crossroads Center Rescue Mission in Kearney.

UNMC, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals partner on student interest fair
Earlier this year, UNMC and Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals partnered on a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Student Interest Fair. Students who attended the event had an opportunity to meet with practicing physicians in the field of physiatry and learn more about various sub-specialties, venues of care and innovative research.

Topics and presenters included:

  • History and Careers in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Michael Weaver, D.O.;
  • Anatomical Spasticity Interventions Model Demonstrations, IPSEN
    Biopharmaceuticals;

  • Communication and Patient Education in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Joseph Chen, M.D.;

Surgery chair David W. Mercer, M.D., named to Nebraska Medicine board of directors

David W. Mercer, M.D., chair of UNMC Department of Surgery, was recently named to the Nebraska Medicine Board of Directors along with Eric Keen, CEO of HDR, Inc.

Dr. Schlitzkus tabbed for key post by Young Fellows Association
Lisa Schlitzkus, M.D., assistant professor, surgery-general surgery, has been selected by the Young Fellows Association (YFA) to serve as the liaison representative to the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma.

Dr. Schlitzkus will serve a three-year term ending in October 2021. As liaison representative, her duties will include: Active attendance and participation in all committee conference calls and in-person meetings; completion of an annual report summarizing the work of the committee and its contributions for publication in the YFA e-newsletter; and attendance at YFA programming at the ACS annual Clinical Congress.

The YFA represents the interests of surgeons under the age of 45 and provides a forum for these individuals to help shape the future of the ACS and its various surgery specialties.

Retirements announced
The UNMC Department of Human Resources has released a list of two retirements for the month of December. Both the retirees celebrated 30 years of service this year. They include:

  • Judy Olsen, College of Dentistry – Lincoln Clinic Administration, retired Dec. 8 (start date April 4, 1988).
  • Leslie Hellbusch, M.D., College of Medicine neurosurgery, retired Dec. 1 (start date July 1, 1988)
