COM resident of the month

Name: Christopher Deans, MD

Medical school you attended/year you graduated: UNMC/Class of 2016

Residency/fellowship at UNMC: Orthopaedics

Program director: Matthew Mormino, MD

How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC:
It’s a five-year residency program. I have been here for a total of 6.5 years, including medical school.

What do you like the most about your training program:
Our program comes as a nice mixture of academic and private hospital/clinic experience with a wide breadth of orthopaedic exposure. We also are very fortunate to have faculty that are excellent leaders and mentors, giving us examples of what to strive for in our careers.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future:
This is a tough question. While the push for technological innovations and simulated patient experiences in education is appealing, it is exorbitantly expensive and must be wisely balanced with real, human patient hands-on experience. I foresee that the pendulum will swing back and forth in the future.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

  • Marrying Alese, my wife, who is well out of my league, and having a healthy baby girl.
  • Getting my Chevy Equinox to survive to 180,000 miles.
  • Despite being in orthopaedic residency, having never broken a bone.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • I enjoy reading non-medical literature.
  • I have eaten the same breakfast nearly every day for the last five years. We call it "progurt" –  Greek yogurt, oats, almonds, berries, honey and cinnamon.
  • Next up on the bucket list for places to travel is Ireland.
