Andrews to retire after 46-year career

After a 46-year career in health care administration, Shari Andrews is set to retire on Dec. 6.

A celebration will be held Monday, Dec. 3, from 2-4 p.m. in Private Dining Room C.

“Shari has been instrumental in facilitating the many changes our department has seen throughout her long tenure,” said Bryan Schwahn, vice chairman of administration and finance of the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology. “Her organization, work ethic and vast knowledge of our health care and university systems will be missed.”

Andrews’ career began at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1972 as an administrative clerk. After many different roles in varying departments within Nebraska’s university system, Andrews joined the department of anesthesiology in 1996. In the past 22 years with the department, Andrews has facilitated many changes and much growth.

“When I started here we only had about a dozen faculty members, no CRNAs (certified registered nurse anesthesists) and just a few residents,” Andrews said.

Throughout her many years of service, Andrews was awarded two Bright Idea awards for her cost-saving efforts and several Silver U Awards. In retirement, she looks forward to having more time for hobbies she enjoys, such as skiing, crafting, sewing, knitting and crocheting.

“I’ll miss the people and friendships I made here,” she said. “Many of my friends here have already retired, so it’s my turn now.”
