Bridge to Care Fall Refugee Health Fair Saturday

The annual fall Refugee Health Fair will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Benson High School.

Hosted by Bridge to Care, a student-led interprofessional organization at UNMC focused on refugee health, the health fair will be staffed by UNMC students who represent all colleges, alongside 30 community vendors.

They will provide health education, screenings and services to an expected 300-400 refugees from Omaha communities such as the Sudanese, Somali, Karen, Karenni and Bhutanese. Free services will include flu shots, and vision, dental, BMI and blood pressure screenings.

UNMC students represent ophthalmology, College of Nursing, EMPOWER, SHARING Clinics, Center for Healthy Living and College of Pharmacy. Community vendors contributing their services to the refugees include Creighton Family Medicine Residency Clinic, Creighton University School of Dentistry and Pharmacy, North Omaha Area Health Free Clinic (NOAH Clinic), One World, Charles Drew, Methodist Hospital, Methodist College, Project Harmony, Refugee Empowerment Center, Douglas County Health Department and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Lunch is sponsored by Godfather’s Pizza.

Bridge to Care is supported by the UNMC Center for Reducing Health Disparities and the Office of Community Engagement.
