Chicago physician to lead pediatrics for UNMC, Children’s Hospital

Anna Spagnoli, M.D., will join the teams at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and the University of Nebraska Medical Center as chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
 
In addition to holding the Carol Remmer Angle, M.D., Presidential Chair, Dr. Spagnoli will serve as pediatrician-in-chief and senior vice president of pediatric services at Children’s and as executive director of the Child Health Research Institute.
 
Dr. Spagnoli comes to Omaha from Chicago’s Rush University Children’s Hospital and Rush University Medical Center, where she served as professor and chair of the department of pediatrics and held the Woman’s Board Endowed Chair of Excellence in Pediatric Care, Research and Education.
 
In her administrative role as chair, Dr. Spagnoli oversaw one of the largest departments at Rush University, including more than 110 physicians, 13 divisions, two residency programs, four fellowship programs and departmental research operations of more than $6 million of annual extramural research funding.
 
Dr. Spagnoli’s own research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and other public and private agencies for nearly 20 consecutive years. She has been principal investigator or co-investigator for more than 25 research projects. Dr. Spagnoli has authored or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, monographs, editorials and abstracts with the primary focus on regenerative medicine applied to genetic and degenerative disorders of bone and cartilage.
 
Previously, she was at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she served as division chief and fellowship program director of pediatric endocrinology. In her earlier academic career, she was a faculty member at Vanderbilt University and at Oregon Health & Science University. 
 
Dr. Spagnoli received her medical degree from the University of Rome Tor Vergata, School of Medicine in Italy. She completed her pediatrics residency at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and then at Oregon Health & Science University, where she received fellowship training in pediatric endocrinology. She maintains an active clinical practice and holds certification in pediatric endocrinology from the American Board of Pediatrics.

Dr. Spagnoli will join Children’s and UNMC in early 2019.
