Dr. Shillcutt Earns Early Career Achievement Award during Alumni Weekend

Sasha Shillcutt, M.D., won the Early Career Achievement Award during UNMC’s Alumni Reunion Weekend on Sept. 21-22.

She was amongst 11 other healthcare professionals recognized for various award-winning achievements. Her prowess in cardiothoracic anesthesiology as well as her advocacy of physician wellbeing and empowerment of women physicians contributed to her earning the award.

“It was an honor to receive the award alongside the other winners who have changed the face of medicine,” Dr. Shillcutt said. “I am very thankful to all the mentors and sponsors I’ve had who have encouraged me to keep persisting, even despite failures.”

Dr. Shillcutt said she strived for such success early in her career when a senior faculty member encouraged her to find a niche and become an expert. She sought out other experts at a national level and worked hard to perform at their level, forcing herself out of her comfort zone and into national work.

At the ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Omaha’s downtown Hilton Hotel, Dr. Shillcutt extended thanks to her colleagues in the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Division, including Division Chief Tara Brakke, M.D., as well as Department Chair Steven J. Lisco. Additionally, she cited mentorship from senior leaders of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology who encouraged me to aim high and lead in this space.

“But honestly, the person who deserves the most credit is my husband, Lance,” Dr. Shillcutt remarked. “He is an amazing life partner who supports me and our family 24/7. Without his support I would not have the focus required to achieve this award.”
