COM resident program director of the month

Name: Trevor Van Schooneveld, MD

Medical school attended:  UNMC

Location of your residency/fellowship training:

Internal medicine – UNMC; infectious diseases – Creighton University

What residency/fellowship program at UNMC are you serving as program director for: Infectious diseases

Number of trainees: 4

How long have you been the program director: 5 years

What made you chose to become the program director:

I was a chief resident at UNMC and really enjoyed working with trainees and was comfortable with the administrative components of the job. I really enjoy working with our fellows. It is very rewarding seeing them grow into ID physicians.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future:

Funding of the entire graduate medical education apparatus – and in particular for cognitive and supportive specialties such as ID – has been and will continue to be a challenge.  Additionally, the administrative burden on programs has continued to increase. Finally, the challenge of balancing service obligations with education in our busy work environment is challenging.

What are the strengths of your training program:

Training at UNMC provides our fellows a vast and diverse clinical ID experience.  They become experts in the management of infections in both complex and immunocompromised patients.  Our HIV clinic is multidisciplinary and provides a fantastic training experience. Fellows are mentored in research projects by faculty who are national experts in their field including oncology ID, transplant ID, infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, biopreparedness, orthopedic ID, and HIV.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

–Creation and expansion of the UNMC ID fellowship program;

–The success of the Nebraska Medicine antimicrobial stewardship team with whom I get to work; and

–Our antimicrobial stewardship outreach program that supports stewardship efforts in small hospitals and long term care facilities across Nebraska.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

–I have five children – three girls, ages 15, 14, and 11, and two boys, ages 9 and 6.

–I am originally from Colorado.

–I love to ski and cheer for the Denver Broncos.
