Strings players needed for inaugural orchestra

Interest is high for the inaugural UNMC/Nebraska Medicine orchestra.

And, while the woodwinds, percussion and brass sections have filled out, string players are still needed.

In partnership with the UNO School of Music, the med center orchestra will play under the baton of Matthew Brooks, D.M.A., director of orchestras at UNO.

Faculty, staff and students who play string instruments and want to participate in the orchestra, should contact Dr. Brooks at matthewbrooks@unomaha.edu. Woodwinds, percussion and brass players are welcome to fill out a brief online form regarding possible future openings.

The orchestra is a creative outlet designed to enrich and entertain participants, while also boosting morale, mental health and a culture of wellness.

“Anything we do that enriches our exposure to the humanities will have a positive impact on all of us . . . not to mention increase the fun quotient on campus,” said Steven Wengel, M.D., assistant vice chancellor for campus wellness for UNO and UNMC.

Organizers plan to begin rehearsals later this month with practices one evening a week (time and location to be announced). The orchestra will perform each fall and spring.
