Bridge to Care, a UNMC student-led interprofessional organization focused on refugee health, is hosting its annual summer Refugee Health Fair in conjunction with World Refugee Day. The health fair will be on Saturday, June 16 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Joslyn Art Museum.
UNMC students representing all colleges, alongside 22 community vendors, will volunteer at the health fair to provide health education, screenings and services to an expected 400-500 refugees from Omaha communities such as the Sudanese, Somali, Karen and Bhutanese.
Free services will include:
- Vision;
- Dental;
- Body mass index;
- Blood pressure; and
- Glucose level screenings.
UNMC students representing the department ophthalmology and visual sciences, College of Nursing, SHARING Clinics and Be the Match will participate. Community vendors will include Creighton Family Medicine Residency Clinic, Creighton University Dental, One World, Charles Drew, Methodist Hospital, Methodist College, United Health Care, Douglas County Health Department and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Bridge to Care offers volunteers a one-hour refugee cultural orientation with Michaela Dei, refugee health liaison with Lutheran Family Services. Dei will present Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the UNMC College of Public Health, Room 3013. Please contact Jessica Wiens for more information.
