Architecture firm takes part in Denim for Disabilities
Angela Gerlach, director of business development and marketing at Altus Architectural Studios, stopped by the Munroe-Meyer Institute last week to present a $600 check to Meyer Foundation President Mary McHale. The firm raised the money with a Denim for Disabilities fundraiser and an employer match.
“We value our partnership with UNMC and Nebraska Medicine,” Gerlach said. “Our team members enjoy the relationships with each of our respective contacts. As a firm we believe in giving back to the community in which we live and work, and all our staff greatly admires MMI’s mission.”
Altus plans to participate in Denim for Disabilities next year, and the firm has offered to volunteer to assist with the Thursday evening recreational activities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and be available for other events that may require fundraising or volunteer assistance.
Dental students shine in regional clinical exam
A record 100 percent of senior dental students at the UNMC College of Dentistry passed the patient-based clinical portions of the Central Regional Dental Testing Services (CRDTS) examination on their first attempt. CRDTS is a day-long examination during which each student completes clinical care for restorative dentistry and periodontics patients under prescriptive and timed requirements. Successful completion of the CRDTS exam or similar is required for obtaining a dental license in most states.
Board Boot Camp hosted by Nonprofit Association of the Midlands
Colleagues who are interested in becoming a member of a nonprofit board or learning more about what it entails are invited to attend an upcoming boot camp, offered by the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands (NAM). The lunch and learn event will be held on April 6, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 0.12.103 in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Attendees are welcome to bring their lunch to the session. UNMC experts take part in science and engineering fair
UNMC faculty will be the keynote speakers at the annual Metropolitan Science and Engineering Fair (MSEF) on Saturday in Omaha.
Chandran Achutan, Ph.D., UNMC College of Public Health, Lauren Liebig-Trehearn, Au.D., adjunct in the UNMC Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, and Ellen Duysen, Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health at UNMC, will present “Can You Hear Me Now? Hope So . . . Getting to Know Your Ears and Great Ways to Save Your Hearing.”
The fair is designed to promote interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, encourage students to do a research project in one of these areas, and reward students for their efforts. The top six projects in each division, grades six through eight and high school, will advance to the Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences to be held in Lincoln on April 21.
The Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences will be held in conjunction with the 128th annual meeting of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and the sixth annual Nebraska Science Festival. The MSEF encourages all students to investigate the science and engineering concepts that contribute to the understanding of our world and universe.
