Joint programs to begin with Russian medical university

Education and research collaborations soon will begin between UNMC and Kazan State Medical University (KSMU) of Russia now that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed.

Marat Mukhamedyarov, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the international department, and Igor Burykin, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the department of management in public health at KSMU, signed the MOU Monday with UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.

The two KSMU visitors will be on campus until tomorrow, hosted by Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H., dean of the College of Public Health.

The MOU provides for the development of:

  • Joint educational programs, research activities and publications.
  • Exchange of faculty members for lectures, talks and sharing of experience.
  • Exchange of scholars to participate in conferences, colloquia and symposia.
  • Exchange of information in fields of interest to both parties.
  • Exchange of faculty members and students for study, teaching and research.

While public health education is developing in Russia, few master’s of public health programs exist in the country. KSMU launches its new school of public health this fall and Dr. Khan sees an opportunity to offer a joint degree program.

This summer, two KSMU faculty will visit and study UNMC’s public health curriculum, he said.

“The need for trained public health professionals in both countries continues to grow,” Dr. Khan said. “These educational programs will produce professionals who will greatly impact individual and community health.

“There are many reasons to partner with KSMU. Its new master of public health program provides an opportunity for collaboration early on in the program.”

KSMU, located east of Moscow on the Volga River, is the third oldest medical university in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is the only university in Kazan recognized by the World Health Organization and the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Healthcare and Ministry of Education and Science. KSMU has more than 5,500 medical students, clinical residents and interns.
