Med center welcomes CAREEROCKIT program

In February, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine partnered to provide four inspiring days of career experiences to more than 230 local high school students as part of the CAREEROCKIT program.

CAREEROCKIT is an initiative of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce in partnership with countless community partners to connect students and young adults with opportunities to move along the learning pipeline, gain applicable knowledge and build excitement for growing career options.

At the med center, students learned about careers in health science and information technology.

Speakers at the event included:

  • Chad Brough, Nebraska Medicine chief experience officer;
  • Philip Covington, Ed.D., interim assistant vice chancellor of academic affairs and interim director of student services;
  • Frank Venuto, Nebraska Medicine chief human capital officer; and
  • Dele Davies, M.D., senior vice chancellor, academic affairs.

Students saw the iEXCEL simulation laboratory, had hands-on lab experiences at the College of Allied Health Professions, attended a student recruitment presentation from the College of Medicine and the College of Nursing, as well as a presentation on career fields at the med center.

Students also took a lab tour, saw a presentation from the UNMC Department of Pathology/Microbiology, attended a trauma simulation event and toured the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, as well as other activities.

Local schools visiting the med center included:

  • Abraham Lincoln High School;
  • Bellevue West High School;
  • Beveridge Middle School;
  • Conestoga High School;
  • Elmwood-Murdock Public Schools;
  • Horizon High School;
  • Papillion-La Vista South High School;
  • Platteview High School;
  • Thomas Jefferson High School; and
  • Wahoo High School.
