Speaker to discuss transgender issues in health care

Ryan Sallans

Ryan Sallans, a transgender speaker, author and advocate, will speak on campus on Monday, Nov. 13, as part of an “It’s on US” event.

Sallans, who attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and received a Bachelor of Arts in English and anthropology, Master of Arts in English, and a Master of Arts in educational psychology, will be discussing the experience of transgender individuals accessing health care at noon in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018.

He will provide guidance on how health care professionals can be more inclusive, respectful and responsive to the needs of their transgender patients.

“Ryan is an engaging speaker, author and advocate,” said Carmen Sirizzotti, Title IX coordinator for UNMC. “We will learn a lot from this presentation.”

Sallans is the author of “Second Son: Transitioning Toward My Destiny, Love and Life.”

The event is sponsored by the UNMC Title IX Office and is being coordinated by EMPOWER, a student-led Legacy project supported by the Office of Community Engagement within Academic Affairs. Lunch will be provided to the first 50 participants.
