Sen. Hilkemann visits MMI

Nebraska State Sen. Robert Hilkemann, D.P.M., who represents Omaha’s District 4, visited MMI in October, touring the building and viewing presentations by MMI Director Karoly Mirnics, M.D., Ph.D., and representatives of several departments.

Director of Psychology Keith Allen, Ph.D., spoke to Sen. Hilkemann about MMI’s statewide network of behavioral health professionals embedded in pediatrician and family medicine office.

Sen. Hilkemann toured the motion analysis lab where Director Max Kurz, Ph.D., Director of Physical Therapy Sandra Willett, Ph.D. student Rashelle Hoffman and Brad Corr, D.P.T., showcased the comprehensive scope of the collaborative work being done between researchers and expert clinicians in the field using technology for motion capture and biofeedback, a custom-built video game that assesses motor action planning and adapted motorized toy cars and bicycles to promote independent mobility.

Director of Speech-Language Pathology Amy Nordness, Ph.D., and Jessie McMordie showcased fiber-optic endoscopic evaluation of the swallow. McMordie passed a scope with a camera on the end through Dr. Nordness’ nose and into her throat so Sen. Hilkemann could observe how the cutting-edge technology operates.

Sen. Hilkemann said he was impressed by the scope of programming at MMI, international recognition and the statewide reach of MMIs services.

“And in touring the facilities there, you can’t help but think that if we’re are doing this now, what could we do with updated facilities?” he said.

The senator added that he enjoyed hearing Dr. Mirnics’ vision for MMI.

“I liked that the reason he came because he thought this institute could be a model for the nation,” he said. “I certainly appreciated his leadership and enthusiasm.”

Dr. Mirnics said he was pleased to show off the range of MMI’s services to Sen. Hilkemann.

“We don’t want to be the ‘best-kept secret’ in Nebraska,” he said. “I enjoyed the chance to share information on our institute, and our colleagues certainly did a good job of displaying some of the important work we do.”
