Interim directors for continuing education named

With the recent retirement of Lois Colburn, executive director of the Center for Continuing Education (CCE) in the UNMC College of Medicine, Brenda Ram and Lisa Bally have been appointed as interim directors.

About the CCE

The CCE began in 1958 and is one of the country’s oldest accredited providers of continuing education for physicians. In 1967, the CCE was one of only seven medical school continuing education programs accredited by the American Medical Association (AMA).

Today, the CCE ranks in the highest tier of all continuing medical education providers, having been awarded accreditation with commendation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for a term of six years. The accreditation runs through July 2020. Accreditation reflects that the CCE provides physicians with relevant, effective, practice-based continuing medical education that supports quality improvement in U.S. health care.

Ram, who has worked in continuing education since 1983, is in charge of educational programs. She had been serving as a coordinator. As interim director, Ram is responsible for coordinating the development, implementation and evaluation of continuing education activities for health care professionals and ensuring that programs are in alignment with the institutional mission and meet accreditation requirements.

Bally is in charge of business administration. She started at UNMC in the department of pathology and microbiology in 1991. She joined continuing education in 2000 and has been serving as administrator since 2006. As interim director, she is responsible for overseeing the daily business operations for the CCE.

The CCE offers a broad range of programming ranging from primary care issues to the latest developments in oncology and other key specialties at UNMC. Programs draw multidisciplinary attendees from throughout the region, nation and world.

Educational offerings include conferences, live programs via the internet, self-directed learning activities, outreach to rural communities and several programs for the American Heart Association. In 2015, the CCE offered 1,394 certified activities reaching more than 40,000 physicians and other health care professionals.
