September kicked off the Re-Imagining U program with several well-received training programs. The momentum will continue in October with several events in conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15).

On Oct. 11, Jose Francisco Garcia will deliver a presentation on how historical events tie Americans to the Spanish experience in the Americas and how the co-mingling of cultures contributes to our national heritage.

Garcia is a third-generation Mexican American, a U.S. Army veteran and a representative of the Chicano Awareness Center. He has lived in Omaha since 1976.

Through the years, Garcia and his wife, artist Linda Rivera, have installed many exhibits and delivered numerous presentations and workshops about Mexican American arts and culture. Garcia is a trustee with the Nebraska State Historical Society and continues his efforts as an artistic and cultural curator/archivist with the Mexican American Historical Society.

This session, held from noon-1 p.m., will explore the relevance of Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, Dia de los Muertos, Dia de los Ninos and other commemorations crossing over to American mainstream culture.

Cookies will be provided for the celebration, but feel free to bring your own lunch.

The program is being provided through Re-Imagining U, the new employee development program shared by UNMC and UNO.

Register for this and any other events through Employee Services on the Education Tab under My Registrations.
