Dr. Esposito receives pediatric orthopaedic honor
Paul Esposito, MD, professor, orthopaedic surgery, was honored in September with the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Orthopaedics Distinguished Service Award.
The award was presented during the Section on Orthopaedics 2017 National Conference & Exhibition in Chicago and is the section’s highest honor.
The Section on Orthopaedics was founded in 1976 to improve musculoskeletal health of children through mentorship, education, research, advocacy and service. The Distinguished Service Award, established in 1995, recognizes an individual in the field of pediatric orthopaedics who has contributed to the American Academy of Pediatrics mission of excellence in research, teaching and patient care.
The section’s executive committee cited Dr. Esposito as "a dedicated leader and strong advocate for most of his career in the field of pediatric orthopaedics – within the AAP and beyond." The committee commended Dr. Esposito’s commitment to the betterment of children’s musculoskeletal health, recognizing him as "one of the giants in the world of pediatric orthopaedics."
Dr. Esposito attended Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia followed by a surgical internship and residency at the United States Naval Regional Medical Center. He completed a fellowship at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati.
His passions include advancing the care of children with osteogenesis imperfecta and musculoskeletal effects of pediatric obesity.
Dr. Esposito has served as a member of the Section on Orthopaedics Executive Committee and as a long-standing member of the Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness of the Section on Uniformed Armed Services. He has also served as head of the Pediatric Section of the US Bone and Joint Decade, and continues to serve as an ambassador of the International Bone and Joint Decade.

Employees reminded to avoid unauthorized accessing of patient information
Here’s a helpful reminder to all faculty, students, residents and staff with One Chart access:
Patient information, including the hospital census and department census lists, may be accessed only as required for current, work-related reasons. It is not permissible to access patient information out of curiosity or for non-work related reasons.
Nebraska Medicine and UNMC are committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of our patients. The Privacy Office audits One Chart user activity and takes seriously all reports of potential privacy breaches.
Violations of patient privacy may result in corrective action or scholastic action up to and including termination/dismissal and reporting to applicable licensing agencies, in addition to possible fines, civil or criminal penalties under state or federal law.
NOTE: Adding yourself to a patient’s Treatment Team in One Chart does not make accessing that patient’s chart appropriate.

Dr. Hinrichs addresses national Blue Cross/Blue Shield convention
Steven Hinrichs, M.D., chair of pathology and microbiology, gave an invited lecture at the national convention of BlueCross/Blue Shield affiliated companies and their chief information officers.
The meeting was attended by representatives of 35 national affiliates and was held in Omaha, Sept. 17-19. The title of Dr. Hinrichs' presentation was "Empowering Precision Medicine through Genomics and Informatics."
"I appreciated that their leadership wanted to learn more about the scientific drivers behind molecular medicine and where this field is headed," Dr. Hinrichs said. "They are facing many challenges and our experts can play a very helpful role."
It was the first time in more than 15 years that the BC/BS national convention was held in Omaha.
UNMC's Bartee named 'Friend of Medicine'
UNMC Vice Chancellor for External Affairs Bob Bartee has received the Nebraska Medical Association's 2017 Friend of Medicine Award. He was nominated for the award by the Nebraska Medical Association's Board of Directors.
The award recognizes non-medical professionals who perform outstanding service to the betterment of the health of the people of the state of Nebraska.
During the awards ceremony, Bartee, who has been at UNMC since 1980, was lauded as a major force in several significant health initiatives, including: the earmarking of 20 percent of Nebraska's Tobacco Settlement Funds to medical research; directing a portion of the state's cigarette tax to cancer research; creating the Nebraska Cancer Registry; and coordinating efforts to raise funds for the new Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
He also is responsible for securing state support for the nationally-recognized Nebraska Rural Health Education Network, creating the UNMC Health Professions Tracking Center and the UNMC Office of Alumni Relations.
