MMI, Children’s researchers win poster award at national conference
The Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Holly Roberts, Ph.D., Howard Needelman, M.D., and student Madi Galas teamed with Kim Duncan, M.D., and Carman DeMare, D.N.P., of Children’s Hospital & Medical Center to win the award for best research poster at the Sixth Annual Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Symposium, held in June in Ann Arbor, Mich. The winning poster was titled, “NICU Graduates with Congenital Heart Disease at Follow Up: Does Head Circumference at Birth Predict Developmental Outcomes?”

UNMC community turns out for eclipse
From a “Molar Eclipse” party at the UNMC College of Dentistry to a gathering of students, faculty and staff at the Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza on UNMC’s Omaha campus, the UNMC community turned out to watch the solar eclipse Monday. UNMC graduate nursing student receives APNA scholarship
Janette Stallings, a graduate student pursuing her master’s degree in the UNMC College of Nursing – Omaha Division, has received a Student Scholarship from the board of directors of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). She was one 30 undergraduate/pre-licensure and graduate students to receive the scholarship. Recipients were selected from hundreds of applicants based on academic merit and dedication to psychiatric-mental health nursing. The scholars come from diverse schools of nursing at universities and colleges across the nation.

Recipients receive complimentary registration, travel, and lodging expenses to attend the APNA 31st Annual Conference, Oct. 18-21 in Phoenix. Students also enjoy one year of complimentary membership in APNA, which includes access to education, networking, and resources to further develop their skills as they prepare to enter the nursing workforce.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is a national professional membership organization committed to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing and wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems and the care and treatment of persons with
psychiatric disorders.

CityMatCH’s Fitzgerald named to MPI Heartland Chapter board

CityMatCH’s Maureen Fitzgerald recently was appointed to the board of directors as director of education for the Meeting Professionals International Heartland Chapter.

MPI Heartland Chapter is made up of members in Iowa and Nebraska and hosts bi-monthly events that foster professional development for members along with creating monthly opportunities for buyers and suppliers to network. The organization provides innovative and relevant education, networking opportunities and business exchanges and acts as the voice for the promotion and growth of the meetings industry.

CityMatCH is a national membership organization of city and county health departments’ maternal and child health programs and leaders that strengthens public health leaders and organizations to promote equity and improve the health of urban women, families, and communities.

LEND faculty attend Autism CARES annual meeting
Members of the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) faculty participated in the Autism CARES annual meeting in Bethesda, Md., in July. MMI participants in the conference, titled “Pathways to Progress,” included LEND associate Kristin Mayleben-Flott, speech therapist Jennifer Brock and behavioral training coordinator Torri Smith-Tejral, who presented the poster “Implementation of a BCBA Training Tract within a LEND Program.”

Autism CARES (Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education and Supports Act) was passed in 2014 as a reauthorization of the Combating Autism Act. The focus of this program is to continue research, education and training activities related to autism through various agencies. Nebraska LEND is one of the agencies that utilizes this money to train both current and future providers in evidence-based practice related to diagnosis, care and research.
