Retirement tea Tuesday for Sheri Dunbar

The campus is invited to a retirement tea for Sheri Dunbar, to be held from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, in the private dining rooms in University Tower.

Dunbar, the grants administration coordinator for the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, joined UNMC in 1977 as a department secretary in cardiology and moved to the College of Pharmacy in 1978 to become a department administrative assistant. She joined the Eppley Institute in 1990 as the coordinator of the cancer research training program and eventually became assistant director for communications, development and education, serving on numerous UNMC committees during this time.

She worked with Raymond W. Ruddon Jr., M.D., Ph.D., director of the cancer center at that time, to bring together two groups of community leaders — the Cancer Center Advisory Board and the Friends of the Cancer Center — to assist with growth of the center.

Dunbar left UNMC in 2001, but returned in 2010 to take on her current role.

“The Department of Internal Medicine was fortunate to have Sheri join us when she returned to UNMC after her career had taken her to other cities,” said Debra Romberger, M.D., Henry J. Lehnhoff Professor and chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine. “She has played a vital role in helping us submit more grants and papers and enhancing our success in these activities. In addition, she has been an important resource regarding research regulations. She will be sorely missed.”

Ted Mikuls, M.D., Umbach Professor of Rheumatology in Internal Medicine, said Dunbar had been central to the department’s growth in research.

“We’re really appreciative of all of her insight and efforts supporting investigators across all of our divisions for the last several years,” he said.

In retirement, Dunbar plans to become involved in volunteer work with community organizations.

“Over the years, I have witnessed many changes that led UNMC to become bigger and better in everything it does,” she said. “I have been proud to be involved with an organization that valued innovation and creativity at all levels.”
