DEM Fellows – Notable Presence at National Meetings

"The culture of scholarship is highly encouraged at the fellow level in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism," Dr. Cyrus Desouza, DEM chief said. "Fellows and faculty take time out of their busy schedules to develop projects, complete them and submit the results to national meetings that result in presentations. It is felt that this activity contributes greatly to the overall development of our fellows as they train to gain independence."

86th Annual American Thyroid Association Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado in September 2016

  • Kajalben Buddhdev, MBBS, second-year fellow, was chosen to present a "Highlighted Oral Abstract" titled: "Sequencing Analysis of T1Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma."
  • Anery Patel, MBBS, now assistant professor, Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism, presented a poster on the, "Optimal Timing of Thyroglobulin Measurement Following Thyroidectomy ."

National Endocrine Society Meeting in Orlando, Florida in April 2017

  • Padmaja Akkireddy, MBBS, second-year fellow, gave an oral presentation at the with a presentation titled, "Repeat Biopsy with Afirma GEC for Indeterminate Thyroid Nodules: An Institutional Experience."
  • Padmaja Akkireddy, MBBS, second-year fellow, presented a posted on "A Novel case of Acromegaly that Presented with Diabetes and DKA."
  • Kajalben Buddhdev, MBBS, second-year fellow, presented a poster at the National meeting "Factors that Affect Weight Regain after Sleeve Gastrectomy".  This poster was chosen for the presidential poster competition.  It was also selected to be presented as an oral presentation at the Androgen Excess and PCOS Update Satellite Symposium the day before the Endocrine Society started.
  • Kaitlin Brau, MD, first-year fellow, presented a poster "Brain Abnormalities in Type 1 Diabetes: Magnetoencephalographic Evidence." She was awarded a travel grant from the Helmsley Charitable Trust Abstract Awards in Type 1 Diabetes. 

American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) National Meeting in Austin, Texas in May 2017

  • Meredith Ross, MD, second-year fellow, has two accepted poster presentations for this meeting:
    • "Shared Medical Visits Shared Medical Visits for Spanish-Speaking Patients with Diabetes: Peaks and Pitfalls."
    • "Spurious Testosterone Laboratory Result in Patient Taking Asfotase Alfa."
  • Meghan Gaule, MD, first-year fellow, has an accepted poster titled "Adrenal Insufficiency and Primary Hypothyroidism as a Harbinger of Worsening POEMS Syndrome."
