ITS leader Yvette Holly announces June retirement

Yvette Holly, assistant vice chancellor for UNMC's information technology services

When Yvette Holly began her career on the UNMC campus, email was sparse, word processing was being introduced, and PCs were just starting to replace dumb terminals.

How things have changed, said Holly, whose leadership — during a time when technology has engulfed education, research and patient care — has guided UNMC’s information technology infrastructure and support services.

On June 30, Holly will retire as assistant vice chancellor for UNMC’s Information Technology Services, capping more than 35 years on campus.

“I’ve had a fabulous career,” she said. “I have seen tremendous growth and tremendous adoption of technology on campus, and am extremely proud of the many significant accomplishments and day-to-day work done by the talented and dedicated ITS team in support of the mission critical services of UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.”

Holly joined UNMC in 1981 as a COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) programmer and moved through the ranks until becoming assistant vice chancellor in 2000. In this role, Holly essentially serves as chief information officer for 120 employees and oversees UNMC’s complex data, voice and video infrastructure. In addition, she manages hundreds of computer applications, as well as services related to UNMC’s education and research mission. She also provides comprehensive infrastructure and technical support to UNMC’s primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, an IT partnership that she both negotiated and put into play in 1999.

“Yvette has been one of the dozen or so loyal, dedicated employees who were instrumental in growing UNMC from a small state medical center into a world-class academic health science center,” said Deb Thomas, vice chancellor for business and finance. “We wish her a happy retirement. She will be missed.”

In 2006, the Applied Information Management Institute honored Holly with its Technology Chief of the Year Award, which recognizes individuals for their contributions to Nebraska’s technology industry.

Upon retirement, Holly plans to travel, pursue hobbies and spend time with family and friends. “I look forward to having the luxury of doing things on my schedule,” she said.
