How I fell in love with internal medicine and hospital medicine:
I love challenges and in internal medicine there is no shortage of that. I love to make a difference in patients’ lives and practicing in an acute hospital setting is the ultimate setup for seeing the rewards of one’s contribution. To be able to teach the next generation of young physicians and infuse them with passion and interest is the cherry on the cake.

Degrees:

  • M.D., internal medicine, Tripoli University Medical Center, 2007
  • Internal medicine residency, MedStar Harbor Hospital, Baltimore, 2013

Memberships:

  • Fellow of the American College of Physicians
  • Society of Hospital Medicine
  • Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I am good swimmer.
  • I love to travel — visited 12 countries, with more to come.
  • I listen to “Fresh Air with Terry Gross” daily on my commute home. Malcolm Gladwell is my favorite author.

    Welcome to UNMC. Dr. Hegagi.

  2. MIchelle says:

One of the best doctors I've ever had treat me. Her passion and level of caring are incredible. She is very thorough, and, as far I am concerned, is an excellent doctor.

This doctor quite literally helped save my life. At 32 I was a full blown alcoholic. I arrived to the ER with a very unlikely chance I would even survive the night. My liver failed, kidney's failed, and my lungs were filling with fluid. Each day was a struggle for them to keep me alive another day. I was hospitalized four about 3 months. During this time, i had dozens of doctors. Instead of sugar coating my problems, she told me the truth, she made me cry, empowered me, and made me want to fight for everything. Im almost three years sober, and a big part of that is because of Dr. Hegagi. There's not enough appreciation and gratitude that i could give. I'll keep fighting but I'll never forget her!
