From the Chair

The 2016-17 academic year is off to a great start! We have a wonderful group of new residents and fellows who have joined us along with our chief residents Drs. Rae Rohlfsen, Shana Peper, and Clayton Jordan. In addition, we have over 15 new faculty who are now a part of our department team. We are excited for all the talents they bring to us. Please scan through their pictures so you can welcome them as you meet them on the wards, in clinics, or in conferences and teaching sessions.

This issue of our newsletter includes some our special recognitions that occurred at the end of last academic year including our department research awards and residency program awards. Congratulations on all the accomplishments that form the basis of these awards! You will also find information about how our faculty are distinguishing themselves on the national scene whether with publications (an example, Dr. Kalil’s role with the IDSA/ATS guidelines or pneumonia) or presentations at meetings (great job to the General Internal Medicine team on all their presentations at the Society of General Internal Medicine meeting this past spring). You will also see information about some of our specialty clinic work.

You will hear more in the next newsletter, but we are very excited to announce that Dr. Vince Pompili of the Ohio State University will join us as the new Division Chief of Cardiology in November. He is enthusiastic to come to UNMC and Nebraska Medicine and continue to build our cardiovascular programs that have been developed so well by Dr. John Windle. Dr. Windle is not leaving us, only moving on to focus on his own research program as well as continue to offer excellent care to many patients. He has made such a difference in the cardiology program in the Department of Internal Medicine and we are very grateful for his leadership.

Fall is in the air and with that brings many fun activities in Nebraska. I hope you find some time to enjoy the cooler weather in activities with family and friends.

With gratitude for all each of you does,

Debra Romberger, MD
