College of Allied Health Professions in Kearney to host open house

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Allied Health Professions will host an open house on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the Health Science Education Complex on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.

Prospective students will have the opportunity to learn about careers in some of the college’s programs such as medical laboratory science, medical imaging and therapeutic sciences, physical therapy and physician assistant. Prospective students as well as the public will have the opportunity to see the facility which opened in August 2015. The facility includes programs of the UNMC College of Nursing.

The facility was initiated to address critical health care workforce shortages and provide educational opportunities to students interested in rural health and primary care without having to relocate to eastern Nebraska.

In the facility, students have access to state-of-the-art classrooms, clinical teaching laboratories, student interaction space, a gross anatomy lab, clinical simulation facilities and an energized radiography lab.

In the lab, students learn to properly position and take X-ray images of a "phantom" with simulated bones, joints and organs, using a state-of-the-art digital imaging system. The energized lab provides a safe learning environment for students to simulate imaging protocols and for instructors to share content with students across the state through high resolution radiographs.

The UNMC College of Allied Health Professions in Kearney offers programs in physical therapy, physician assistant, medical laboratory science and three medical imaging and therapeutic sciences programs — radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and diagnostic medical sonography.

Free parking is available in lots near the building, which is located at 2402 University Dr., just off 24th St. (Hwy. 30) on the southwest corner of campus.
