Geoffrey Talmon, M.D., a highly decorated classroom teacher at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has been named inaugural director of the new Interprofessional Academy of Educators (IAE) at UNMC.
Dr. Talmon is associate professor, pathology and microbiology, program director for the pathology residency program and assistant director of the gastrointestinal pathology fellowship program. He specializes in gastrointestinal, renal, liver, and transplant pathology.
In 2014, Dr. Talmon was named to UNMC’s Golden Apple Hall of Fame for outstanding teachers after being recognized for five consecutive years for excellence in medical student education. In addition, he has received the College of Medicine Basic Science Outstanding Teaching Award and the Hirschmann Prize for Outstanding Teaching. He was recognized in 2015 as a “40 Under 40” honoree by the Midlands Business Journal.
The IAE is a volunteer society for UNMC educators. Its mission is to provide a resource that will elevate the level of teaching across all colleges and share innovations with UNMC's alumni and community partners.
It is designed to equip faculty with the most effective teaching techniques to improve student learning, mentor faculty in their development as health science educators, and enhance UNMC's national reputation. It strives to provide students with a common standard of excellence in their classrooms and clinics.
"IAE will enable UNMC to continue to fulfill its mission to provide world-class health care education from both the clinical and research aspects," said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. "The academy will further strengthen UNMC's important interprofessional initiatives."
Dr. Talmon joined the UNMC faculty in 2008 as assistant professor and was elevated to associate professor in 2012. He completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at UNMC and his fellowship in surgical pathology at the Mayo Clinic. He is currently obtaining a Master of Education in Health Professions degree from Johns Hopkins University.
He is program co-chair for the upcoming Master in Health Professions Teaching and Technology Program, director of pathology education for the second-year of medical school, and director of two courses within that year’s curriculum.
Dr. Talmon also is vice president of the Group for Research in Pathology Education and president-elect of the Nebraska Association of Pathologists.
Joining Dr. Talmon to form the IAE’s leadership team will be two associate directors who bring a strong interprofessional mix of background and experience:
- Kim Michael, the Joseph and Darlene Anderson Distinguished Professor of Imaging Sciences and associate professor in the College of Allied Health Professions. Michael holds a master's in health studies and is a registered diagnostic medical sonographer, vascular technologist and radiographer; and
- Andrew Patterson, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice chair and the Larson Professor of Anesthesiology in the College of Medicine. Dr. Patterson recently joined the UNMC faculty from Stanford University. He is nationally respected for his leadership in lifelong learning with the board of directors of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
