Lunch series will explore safety, sexual violence issues

UNMC's Diane Kortus will speak as part of the series.

The UNMC Department of Human Resources, in partnership with the Title IX Office, will be holding a series of “It’s on Us”-themed Learn@Lunch programs through the spring semester.

Dates and topics for the Learn@Lunch series are:

  • Feb. 25: Stalking and tech abuse on campus
Sarah Balcom is a domestic violence program coordinator at the Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence. She will provide a brief overview of the realities of stalking and tech abuse on campuses, the technology used to facilitate this abuse and resources available to assist survivors who are experiencing stalking and tech abuse.

  • March 29: Bystander intervention
Diane Kortus, employee training and development specialist at UNMC, will uncover the science behind bystander behavior. What makes us freeze when we are unsure how to react? We will discuss intervening and what it means to transition into an “active bystander.” It can make all the difference where we live, work and go to school when we stand up for each other. It’s on us.

  • April 20: An overview of sexual violence and victim impact
Michelle Miller is a sexual violence program coordinator at the Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence. Her presentation will outline the dynamics of sexual violence on college
campuses, including offender tactics, victim impact, common survivor reactions, the neurobiology of trauma, and helpful system response.

All presentations will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Durham Research Center Auditorium.
