College of Nursing offers accelerated BSN in Kearney

As part of its continuing effort to address the state’s nursing shortage, the UNMC College of Nursing will offer its accelerated bachelor’s degree in nursing program in Kearney and admit more students in its program in Scottsbluff.

The deadline for those interested in applying is Oct. 1. The semester begins in May 2016.

The opening of the Health Sciences Education Complex this month on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Kearney will enable expansion of the program at the UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division.

The UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff is expanding its current program to accept two more students each year. To date, 60 students have graduated from Scottsbluff’s accelerated program. The college has accelerated programs in Omaha and Lincoln as well.

“We are delighted to expand our accelerated bachelor’s program in nursing,” said Juliann Sebastian, Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing. “This program provides exceptional learning experiences and career opportunities. Students in the accelerated programs come from so many different backgrounds and bring such diverse expertise, they add new perspectives to the field that advance our values of providing comprehensive, person and family-centered care.”

Students who already have a bachelor’s degree in another field are eligible to apply. The accelerated bachelor’s degree program is an intense program that requires completion in one year. As part of their educational preparation, students will have access to state-of the-art simulation labs and complete clinical rotations in nearby facilities to gain a variety of experience.

Students in both the accelerated and traditional bachelor’s degree programs earn 62 credit hours. The hours, coupled with their 58 credit hours of required prerequisite course work at any accredited community college, college, or university, earns a bachelor’s in nursing degree from UNMC.
