UNMC group completes Title IX investigator training

Twenty-nine employees from UNMC were part of a group of 140 university-wide faculty and staff who took part in Title IX training with the Association of Title IX Administrators (ATIXA) on June 1 and 2.

The event, a two-day “Civil Rights Investigator Level One Training Certification Course,” was sponsored by the office of University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds, Ph.D. It was held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska Innovation Campus.

“This event provided a better understanding of Title IX and the responsibilities we have as an institution,” said Carmen Sirizzotti, UNMC Title IX coordinator.

About Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs receiving Federal financial assistance. Title IX states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Topics at the event included: Overview of Title IX; Overview of the civil rights investigation and grievance model; What is the gatekeeping function and why is it essential?; Interviewing strategies; Evidence collection; Due process; Focus on remedies; Sexual assault; and many other facets of the civil rights investigation process.

Sirizzotti called the event a success.

“In addition to completing the training, UNMC faculty and staff had an opportunity to network with faculty and staff from UNL, UNO and UNK,” she said.
