Whether you’re a regular stargazer or a newcomer to astronomy, you’re invited to look into the universe during the Nebraska Science Festival’s Star Parties.
These free, family-friendly Star Parties will be April 16 at the Strategic Air & Space Museum near Ashland, Neb., and April 18 at Valley, Neb. Advance registration is requested for planning purposes.
The events are among the highlights of the Nebraska Science Festival, which is scheduled for April 10-18 at locations across the state. Check nescifest.com for a full listing of SciFest activities and locations, and then sign up to look at the stars (celestial, that is):
- NE SciFest Star Party – April 16 from 8 to 11 p.m. Newcomers to astronomy, children and adults are invited to observe the night sky at NE SciFest's Star Party. A Star Party (which lasts about two hours, depending on weather and crowd size) is fun for the entire family, and is open to everyone. Enjoy night sky constellation tours and views of celestial objects through a number of telescopes provided by the Omaha Astronomical Society. Members of the society will be on hand to guide your sky tours and help you with any questions you may have. Dress warmly as the program takes place outdoors in the parking lot of the Strategic Air & Space Museum. Restrooms inside the museum will be open and available for use. In the event of rain, significant clouds, or high winds/dust/humidity, the event will be canceled. Please check nescifest.com or the festival's Facebook page to stay updated. While the Star Party does not "sell out," we strongly encourage reservations (nescifest@gmail.com) by April 13 so that we may properly plan for the expected number of program participants.
- Star Party at DC West High School – April 18 from 8 to 11 p.m. Come view the stars with Spirit of Peace in rural Douglas County. View the stars through your telescope or through telescopes provided by members of the Omaha Astronomical Society. Plan to meet in the practice field behind DC West High School in Valley, Neb., from sunset until people are ready to go home (about 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.). As long as stars are visible through the telescopes the event will take place. For more information, call 402-541-7019.
