Holi Festival set for Saturday

The second annual HOLI Festival of Colors will be held Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the grassy area of the Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza, between Hope Tower and the ice rink.

Billed as the world’s happiest event, HOLI is a Hindu festival that celebrates the coming of spring with lots of color. Packets of colored corn starch are thrown in celebration, along with food and music.

The first color throw will be at 12:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear a white t-shirt and take photos, which they can submit to Flckr for a photography contest. The deadline to submit photos taken during the festival is April 20.

Other festival activities include a Tibetan welcoming ceremony, Chinese chopstick races and a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House featuring a raffle for a Samsung Galaxy tablet.

If it rains, the festival will be held on April 25. Sponsors include the UNMC Student Senate, UNMC Academic Affairs and the Graduate Student Association. Several other donations were received.

Food is being provided by: Curri, Maharaja Indian Cuisine, Astoria Biryani House, Kurry Xpress, Namaste Plaza, and Sodexo.
